Contract Transparency

PWYP members campaign globally for the comprehensive disclosure of all contracts relating to the extraction of oil, gas and mineral resources. Contract disclosure is a keystone of transparency and good governance, enabling scrutiny of the costs and benefits of extractive projects, deterring corruption and building trust between people, governments and companies.

What we do

In 2020, PWYP launched #DiscloseTheDeal, a global campaign for contract transparency in the oil, gas and mining industries. PWYP coalitions across the world are holding EITI governments to their commitments to publish extractive contracts.

Contract disclosure is a keystone of transparency and good governance in the extractive industries. Thanks to PWYP members, it is becoming a global norm in the extractive sector. More and more contracts are now publicly available, enabling scrutiny of the costs and benefits of oil, gas and mining projects. Contract disclosure helps people understand the value of their natural resources and argue for revenues to be used for public benefit like funding healthcare, education and infrastructure.

It helps communities understand the impacts of oil, gas and mining projects and warn of social or environmental harm.

And as we fight the climate crisis, contract disclosure also helps people to understand how the energy transition will impact government coffers.

It deters corruption in the negotiation process, by enabling public scrutiny of multi-billion deals between governments and oil, gas and mining companies.

Contract transparency can also increase trust between people, governments and companies and increase investor confidence.
