Summit for Democracy Country Commitments Proposal

On December 9-10, 2021, the first of two Summits for Democracy  will take place in the United States with the aim of setting forth an affirmative agenda for democratic renewal and to tackle the greatest threats faced by democracies today, including corruption,  through collective action.

Corruption in the oil, gas and mineral sector undermines the efforts of resource-rich countries to democratise, prosper and address the climate crisis. More foreign bribery cases originate in the extractive sector than any other industry; the sector has spawned some of the world’s largest and most damaging corruption schemes; oil-producers in particular struggle to democratise. Huge portions of the illicit financial flows that spread around the world originate from this sector.

PWYP together with NRGI, Oxfam-America, the ONE Campaign and the Transparency International Accountable Mining Programme has developed a series of proposed country commitments for the 2021-2022 Summit for Democracy in order to democratise the benefits of natural resources, address corruption and ensure public accountability in the extractive sector.
