Launched in 2006, the PWYP Niger coalition has addressed issues including EITI implementation, budget transparency, capacity building for civil society and raising awareness in extractive communities of mining-related issues, such as the use of cyanide in gold mining. The coalition carries out advocacy at the national level, most recently leading a campaign for the government to ensure Niger gets a fair deal as it renegotiates its uranium extraction contract with French multinational AREVA. In particular, the coalition called on AREVA to respect the country’s mining code. PWYP Niger continues to campaign for the contract with AREVA to be published so that civil society can analyse and monitor the agreement.
